Welcome to a new part of thatsmarla.com ! After this past weekend of birthdays we celebrated, it hit me one night after going out for my birthday dinner- not only do I like to cook at home for family and friends, but I also like to support local restaurants and enjoy their food as well. I find inspiration and new ideas when visiting local restaurants and chatting with the chefs and waiters. SO I have created this page for me to give you my honest reviews and recommendations on where to go and eat in North Carolina. It mainly will be in the area of Winston Salem, NC but I do travel to Charlotte, NC and surrounding areas! Who knows I may even post a different state sometime! AH! I am really excited to add this to part of my blog. If you are ever looking for a certain type of atmosphere or craving a particular food- come check out this page! I hope that over time I can steer you into the right direction on how to solve that craving. Here we go!

With my birthday this past weekend, my husband had arranged for our boys to be watched while he took me out to eat to celebrate( yay for surprise date nights). It has been a very long time since we have gone on just a simple date like this. I hate to admit it because we try to make our relationship priority when it comes to quality time together but with two boys under two it is very hard to do. We are getting better at it though which makes a difference. We even spent this Valentine’s Day at home due to having a three month baby boy to tend to ( so I was very excited to go out just us two ) . We ended up at The Old 4th Street Filling Station. I have been to this restaurant many times. It is definitely a staple place to visit in Winston Salem. We always start with the crab dip and I almost always get the shrimp and grits. You can’t go wrong to order the shrimp and grits here!

The crab dip is very creamy and you can taste the crab along with other flavors in the dip. The garlic bread served with this are sliced perfectly for the dip. This time I mixed it up and ordered the Filet Napoleon 4oz. IT WAS SO GOOD. My meat was cooked just the way I ordered it ( Medium) and the crab cake served on top was rich in crab and creaminess. Think you can’t make a steak even more amazing? You can. Put a crab cake on top and BOOM. This meal was delicious and the ambience in the restaurant at dinner time isĀ romantic with candles lit at each table with the lights dimmed. Our waiter was so friendly and very knowledgeable. I was wanting a dirty martini but I only order them at restaurants if they have house made blue cheese olives. Guess what, they do. So naturally I ordered one! Perfect pairing for my birthday dinner. I observed that it was a very family friendly restaurant so if you have kids and wanting to enjoy a nice dinner do not hesitate to bring them with you. See pictures below of the meal.

Crab Dip: Lump crab meat, cream cheese, garlic bread

Filet Napoleon: Beef tenderloin, lump crab cake, chipotle cream sauce, smashed red potatoes, seasonal vegetables.


Dirty Martini: House made blue cheese olives
